Taking the Pith: the MacKenzie Desert of NZ

We are making a documentary that highlights a desert in New Zealand - a country better known for its rainforests.

This desert is about to be changed by intensive dairy-farm development including irrigation projects.

In January an intrepid documentary team will venture on foot from Kurow to Mount Cook, crossing the MacKenzie Country in traditional expeditionary style to ask the people about how they, ordinary Kiwis, use the land; what they love about it and what they perceive are the biggest threats facing it today.

Along the trail the team will be joined by leading figures in the Arts, best able to convey the passion that we as a Nation feel about where we live, via diverse mediums such as prose, art and music. Combined with the vast scenic beauty of the region and the extreme conditions of daytime heat and nocturnal chill, the group will film this unique desert to capture a visual time-capsule before it is developed and lost forever.

But we cannot do this without your help.

RocketHub is not an investment or charity. It is an exchange: funds from fans for rewards from me.

Its an All & More funding mechanism: if I don't reach my financial goal I get to keep what I raise [and make do!] But if I do reach my goal, I get access to exciting opportunities.

Such as continuing a series of historical endeavours - "Exped2012b - The First European Explorers": we will be crossing a trackless wilderness of rainforest - 6 meters of rain a year - and high alpine passes in early 19th Century NZ Explorers' Kit [kilts and wool].

This is not a 'Man vs Wild' show. This is real, unscripted, dangerous and honest adventure without any modern equipment led by a man with 23 years of experience and a passion for the grimy truth of history.
