PROJECT DETAILS

The Healthy Parents Fellowship empowers parents to become leaders in creating healthier communities. Parents improve their own health and the health of others in their community.

The Big Picture

We need new solutions to the obesity epidemic. Many programs are one-time only and do not create lasting lifestyle changes. Healthy Parents Fellowship will run for 6 months, a period long enough to create lasting healthy habits. We will collect data to demonstrate the results of the program.

Training parents to be peer health educators makes sense. They have the credibility. They understand the needs of other parents. They can develop creative ways to embed public health messages into daily life in their community. And it's a more sustainable approach than using outsiders as health educators.

The program will serve mostly low-income Latino families in Washington Heights, which has the second-highest rate of childhood obesity in the city.Washington Heights, like so many of our nation's communities, needs solutions NOW.

Program Overview

Parents will receive health coaching and entrepreneurship training. Sessions will include meditation, self-reflection, nutrition, cooking, and fitness. Parents will work on reaching their individual health goals and family health goals.

Each parent will design and implement a community action project. Projects must focus on improving the health of their family, friends, and neighbors.

  • Six month program
  • 10-15 committed parents
  • Partner site: Church of the Intercession at W 155th St. and Broadway

Why do I need your help? Can't I just get a grant?

Since 2008, it's been my dream to start a successful, innovative program to improve health in urban communities. The idea started developing when I taught elementary school in the Bronx as a part of Teach for America. There, I realized the extent of the nutrition and health problems kids were facing.

In June 2011, I decided I was ready to take a leap of faith. I left my job to dedicate myself to my passion: creating healthier communities.

I launched a successful 6-week summer fitness program for kids in Washington Heights called "Healthy Kids in the Heights." This experience led to the idea for Healthy Parents Fellowship.

The reason I need your help is that we are not an official non-profit organization yet and thus need alternative ways of financing the program.

Why aren't we a non-profit yet? I wanted to develop a program that WORKED before creating an entire organization. Testing Healthy Parents Fellowship as a pilot program first is a strategy for long-term organizational success. This program is exciting and definitely has the potential to become the signature program of a larger non-profit organization.

Where will the money go?

$1100- Mini-grants for parent projects

$500- Publicity, program materials, copies

$500- Healthy snacks and supplies for cooking classes

$200- Space/utilities stipend for church

$200- RocketHub fee (4%) + credit card processing fees (4%)

If the project fuels over 100%, additional funds will be used for non-profit incorporation fees, as well as compensation for the program facilitator and interns.

Why fuel this project?

You're supporting a start-up with immediate growth potential. You're supporting a results-oriented leader who wants to create a program with a proven measurable impact.

Your support means the world. It means that parents will get the opportunity to become healthier and to change their communities. When we empower our parents, transformative change is possible!

                              Let's dream big together.
