Learner Control in Online Training Programs

We've all had to do it: complete an online training program for your job...some more interesting than others!

These programs may be designed to give you more control over the program to customize your learning experience (aka Learner Control).  You might be able to skip sections you already know (or just don't care about), or spend more time on sections you don't understand.

That sounds like a great idea, right?  You know your own learning style, so you should make the best decisions to help you learn.  Well, some research shows that Learner Control helps people learn more.  But other studies show that it actually decreases learning. And we don't know why!  So, I decided to design a study for my Master's Thesis that will explore Learner Control in more detail.

Past research just assumes that when Learner Control is given, everyone uses it the same way.  I think that certain attributes (like your personality or your experience with the topic) will influence the decisions you make in training...and that other people will make different decisions.

I'm actually using crowdsourcing to recruit participants as well, using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome).  Workers on mTurk complete tasks for small amounts of money, which means I need funding to run this study!  mTurk workers will be tracked as they complete a Microsoft Excel training program so we can figure out what's really going on when people are given the freedom to control their learning experience.  But they won't complete the training unless I pay them!  All "fuel" will go toward participant incentives to complete the training program.

By fueling my project, you'll become a part of social science research.  Ultimately, you'll make it possible for me to study learner control in the best way possible, which hasn't been done before.

For those of you new to Rockethub, #Scifund is not an investment or charity. It's a way for fans of science become a part of new and exciting research.  If I don't reach my financial goal I get to keep what I raise. But if I do reach my goal, I get access to exciting opportunities.
