Urban Bard's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

When was the last time theatre surprised you?  Imagine a pair of ancient Greek prisoners of war chained through a subway ventilation grate, or a pirate swashbuckler fighting for her friend's life on a balcony outside a mall.  Picture Macbeth's minions defending a downtown historic site, or the towers of Toronto's financial district standing as backdrop to the villainous ambition of Richard III.  Using Toronto's architecture to stage classical theatre lets us juxtapose the classical and contemporary in a whole new way.

Urban Bard Productions is a recently-formed Toronto theatre company.  We do classical theatre in unusual places, staging awesome plays in urban locations to tell the story in a way that is fresh, accessible, and exciting.  Our previous productions of 'Twelfth Night' and 'The Two Noble Kinsmen' were huge successes, but our pay-what-you-can admission (which is essential to keep our work accessible to all) makes it challenging to cover our production costs.

This year, we have a big season planned, exploring three classical plays in three new Toronto locations.  To get our opening production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" going, we need to raise about $7000 (a bare minimum that will cover our location costs, production expenses, and publicity).  We're asking you, our lovely Fuelers, to help us out with half of that, and we're going after other funding for the other half.

Here's what others have said about our work so far:

"Ingenious use of space, excellent sense of character and altogether clever direction is what sets these two productions apart from the masses of independently produced Shakespeare out there."

"The redistribution of the stage’s surface around us common folk generates such a freshness that bystanders are held transfixed."
