We are the Serengeti Lion Project - a team of researchers determined to understand the African lion and how it fits into today's changing world. Dr. Craig Packer has been directing the Lion Project for over 30 years, making exciting discoveries such as why lions have manes and why they live in groups. Ph.D. candidate Ali Swanson is taking the Lion Project in the exciting new direction of looking at lions within a multi-species context - studying how lions coexist with other large African carnivores. We live and work mostly in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, radio-tracking lions and monitoring camera traps. When we aren't in Serengeti, we are at our home base in Minnesota, where we work with a team of dedicated undergraduates and fellow researchers to analyze our data and make our discoveries public.
