I'm an agroecologist and PhD student, working in the Multifunctional Landscape Analysis and Design Laboratory, here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I did my MS in Agroecology at University of Vermont, doing research on methods for designing sustainable farming systems.
I've been involved with the ecological design framework called 'permaculture' since 2003, as student, educator, and activist. Now I'm bringing permaculture into my research, to help rebuild some of the bridges between the grassroots and modern science.
Doing science that responds directly to the needs of communities - including our global community - is what inspires me. I'm a passionate and dedicated teacher, and spend time every year teaching outside of academia, for a popular audience.
I live in Urbana, IL, with my wonderful partner Brook, and two cats, Dave and Henry. I like dance parties and foraging for wild mushrooms - though I don't seem to do too much of either since I started grad school. Maybe in 2015?
