Hi! I'm Tanya and I'm an actress--I play the role of Crystal Burset on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK and Deputy Kenya Jones on TRUE BLOOD. I'm a gal from the Bronx who LOVES dark chocolate; pizza (black olives, garlic and anchovies are my preferred toppings); Trader Joes' White Cheddar Popcorn and Revlon's Black Cherry lipstick (yeah!). I have a dog named Macarena (yes! like the dance!)-- she's a playful- but- a- little- ghetto black labrador who loves tennis balls.
I've been fortunate to work on some of the most critically acclaimed, successful shows of all time, but it wasn't always this way! I made a meal of ramen noodles and rice and beans more nights than I could count! Oy! I moved to Los Angeles with 200 bucks in my pocket to try my hand at acting for 6 weeks and ended up staying for 15 years. WOW!
That's why the giving component is so important to me with HAIRiette of HARLEM. I was really inspired with what the actor Paul Newman did with NEWMAN'S OWN and I'd like to do something similar: there's a 100 year old organization called THE ACTOR'S FUND that financially helps entertainment professionals when they're in crisis or need; a portion of the proceeds of every HAIRiette product sold will go directly to the fund! The ACTOR'S FUND was kind, compassionate and treated me with respect during my lean years as an actor. They do really great work in the entertainment community and I vowed I would never forget them...
I also teach a workshop at The New School to help creative people think about business in creative ways so they can do it, too!
