Lost Property-Wasted Life: The Photoreportage

My name is Andrea Krizsai and I am a photographer. Through a photographic report I would like to draw attention to the situation of homelessness in Hungary. According to the Délmagyar.hu one out of every 200 people has no roof above his/her head in Budapest.

What is the reason of this dramatic increase of homeless people in Hungary? Like what we’ve been experiencing throughout the world, the Hungarian economy has been suffering from lack of affordable housing, poverty, and unemployment. Even people who are fortunate enough to have a job, earn very little to cover their monthly living expenses such as rent, utilities, food cost, etc. The average Hungarian citizen has to spend more than 70% of their income just to pay only for incidental expenses. In many households people cannot afford to have adequate heating for the winter months.

Not only renters are getting evicted, but there are many cases of homeowners losing their properties as well. Along with buildings getting auctioned off because property owners are unable to pay their mortgage, their personal belongings are also being seized. Extreme inflation of the Hungarian currency has been forcing people, who borrowed money from foreign banks to purchase real estate, to now pay 300% or more per month on the original mortgage payment.

Incredibly, Hungarian Parliament has passed a law, charging people who are caught two times within six months living on the street to be fined 515 EUR or jail time.

Several people have offered to participate in my project who will be losing their homes when the Moratorium (a low for protect the people) expires in April 15, 2012.

Using photography, my goal is to project and raise awareness of what this eviction process is like when hard working citizens’ lives are being auctioned off. What is going to happen to these people next? Where are they going to sleep? Will they be getting any support whatsoever from their government and community?

I already strarted the Project, and my project plan would last four months. The financial support provided by sponsors would be used for travel expenses, and other operating costs. The final project will be displayed on my personal photography website at http://kaig-hu-arg.com as well as in different exhibitions. Also would be published on non-profit organizations' web pages.
