Changes in cell attachment during metastasis

This proposal is to develop research projects for undergraduate and master’s-level students to provide them with the opportunity to learn how to develop, implement and analyze a full-project while working on a serious basic research issue. We will be looking at the process whereby growths change from being benign to metastatic.  Most cancers develop from tissues that are referred to as epithelial. These cells normally have very specific attachment to the neighboring cells that prevent them from leaving the area. When these cells develop abnormal growth this leads to begin growths that are localized and typically able to be successfully removed by surgery. If, however they change their attachments it becomes possible for them to leave the site of origin and migrate throughout the body looking for alternative sites. This creates a metastatic state that is no longer able to be removed by surgery alone, but requires chemotherapy and radiation to attempt to target the remote sites that are too small to be seen. The students will be examining the proteins that make the connections between cells that have low metastatic potential and comparing that to daughter cells that have developed increased ability to leave the initial site of growth. These experiments require us to have ways of detecting the proteins and the instructions for their synthesis and these reagents become the limiting factors in determining how many students I can support. For undergraduate students, about $750 is needed per student while master’s students with larger projects typically require $1,500 per project. If we surpass our goals it would allow me to increase the number of students supported. The $6,000 I am trying to raise would support two undergraduate students and three graduate students helping them to become more complete scientists.

RocketHub is not an investment or charity. It is an exchange: funds from fans for rewards from me. It's an All & More funding mechanism: if I don't reach my financial goal I get to keep what I raise. But if I do reach my goal, I get access to exciting opportunities.
