World Premiere VISITING HOURS by David Caudle

Visiting Hours is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of Visiting Hours must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

The story: A lesbian couple's longtime relationship is threatened when their estranged adult son resurfaces, having been arrested for aggravated assault. Their struggle mirrors that of any couple, gay or straight, faced with the prospect that their child MAY never be “okay”.

Playwright David Caudle says, “I think it is really important to tell the story of gay parents where the kid is not alright. The couple sticks with it and forgives each other for the conflicting emotions, betrayals, and mistakes they make in their desperation. That to me is a depiction of family values that reaches beyond 'the choir' to which positive gay messages usually preach.”

Director Ann Mahoney says, “When a child doesn't turn out the way the parents hoped there is often a huge internal struggle.  Parents ask themselves, 'What did I do? Did I work too much? Was I too hard on them? Was I too easy on them? The answer is never simple or readily available for any parent. However parents, particularly mothers I think, cannot fathom the idea of losing hope in a child no matter how heinous the crime they commit. David's courageous,modern-day prodigal-son story grapples with these issues, and in doing so, shows us a slice of life that is deeply touching, and very human.”
