A Little Hoover History:
The Hoover Dam Collective was founded in 2009 by a group of dynamic and passionate individuals from the world-renowned arts conservatories at the State University of New York at Purchase College. Back then, our goal was to produce a show that gave us the chance to work with others in different art forms . Our first production, “For the Sake of Art,” took place in Purchase’s Dance Theater Lab in March 2010, and included collaborations between visual artists, actors, musicians, dancers, and film makers. This first show was so successful and fulfilling that we felt we had to keep it up! We named ourselves the Hoover Dam Collective (check out the FAQ on the website to learn the origin of this name), and since have organized more than 20 interdisciplinary shows, and have included over 100 emerging artists in our productions. Help us to keep going strong!
What We do:
The HDC produces performances in and around New York City which feature collaboration between music, dance, film, theater, and visual art. We are interested in exploring how various art forms overlap and inform one another. Our performances are site specific to each venue; we feel that each performance space is unique and gives character and new meaning to our shows. One of our primary goals is to expose art to new audiences and break down barriers between these audiences and the performers by creating an accessible, intimate atmosphere. We aim to cultivate local talent and give young artists the chance to learn through collaboration. Most importantly, we hope our work can enable audiences to re-evaluate the role of art in their everyday lives and in the world around us.
We believe that what we are doing is truly unique, and brings a refreshing perspective to the art scene. We use art as a tool for building community, and provide a safe home for emerging artists in a city that can often be isolating and impersonal.
How You Can Help!
The fact that the HDC has survived this long without any real source of funding is a testament to what a generous and supportive community we have created. However, we have reached the point in our development where, in order to expand and reach our full potential, we need to raise some funds. We want to share the Hoover Dam Collective Community with as many people as possible, which is why we’re asking for help through Rockethub!
This campaign is to fuel the HDC’s spring season. We want to produce 5 Hoover Dam Collective shows in the next 6 months.
We are open-minded about what qualifies as "art" and where art can take place (for example, one of our best shows took place in an abandoned space behind a Brooklyn bodega). This enthusiasm and spunkiness is what makes our shows so special. In order to reach a wider group of people, in the next 6 months we would like to produce some shows in more conventional-meaning more expensive- venues. It is important to us to pay the talented artists who perform with us, as well as those who provide services, such as photographers, videographers, bouncers, bartenders, etc. We would also love to be able to hire artists who are further along in their careers to perform alongside emerging artists- we feel that this exchange would be mutually beneficial. Additionally, we intend upon using the funds raised in this Rockethub campaign to help get the word out about the HDC. This includes printing business cards, developing more merchandise, printing and distributing higher quality flyers, pimping out our website, and increasing our presence on the internet, among other things.
Rockethub is a community for artists and funders. Crowdfunding is an innovative way to raise funds and create awareness for creative ventures. Rockethub is not soley a vehicle for donations-it’s also an exchange. We have developed a series of personalized and unique rewards at different price points as a way of thanking you for you donation.
OH YEAH-this is really important: The Hoover Dam Collective is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of The Hoover Dam Collective must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
The Hoover Dam Collective is a beautiful example of how something can be so much larger than the sum of it's parts. Rather than the money coming from a few donors, it is our hope that, in the spirit of the HDC, we can get a whole bunch of you to chip in a small (or large!) amount. Arts organizations in the United States are funded in majority by individuals such as yourselves, so if you believe in what we do, please donate! It really, truly makes a difference.
