Creating soundscapes and melodic accompaniement is something I've been doing since I discovered my first 4-track when I was about 12. Prior to that I was multi-tracking with various tape decks, recording a track then playing it back and accompanying each new track while recording on another deck. Now, 20 years later, I'm multi-tracking in a small home built studio with an array of collected and salvaged instruments creating sound collages and melodicly fragmented soundscapes.
In November of 2010 I released a full length record with Montreal, Quebec's, Constellation records. This recording was a collection of multi-tracked vignettes I recorded during 7 months I was living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Featured amidst these recordings are sounds of landscapes and locations during which time each peice was produced. For example, the use of birds songs and frogs.
Now, I've been working on pre-production for recording a second full length solo record. This new set of recordings I anticipate working with an engineer and stepping things up a bit with the addition of guest players and more exploration with gathered field recordings, all of which require funding. This record I plan on relying heavily on the sound of tape and multiple tape loops extended through several reel to reel machines with single loops. For the field recordings I've made one 2 day trip to an animal refuge which houses many native wildlife species including wolves, coyotes, coydogs and many other animals. I plan on making several more trips to this location and others to gather materials to incorporate into these recordings. The field recordings I'd like to use to bridge melodies and create melodic peices based on specific songs. Namely, recently I recorded a loon warning song I'd like to write a piece of music to.
