Help Us Make Love in a Canoe!

Chimo! (Yeah, we know it didn’t catch on in the 60s, but we think Canada deserves its own national greeting.)

If you’re looking to invest in sending an Ookpik doll to space, you’re up a certain creek without the proverbial paddle; HOWEVER, if you’re looking to help create an 100% Canadian album, then you’re in the right place.

Making Love in Canoe is a revue of Canadian musical theatre that has been performed in Toronto, Stratford, and Regina. Featuring the music of 14 Canadian writers, Canoe entertains, touches, inspires, and informs, all in under 75 minutes.

The first theatrical run will be presented by The Golden Apple Theatre in Regina in January 2012. We are looking to create a companion album to be released in coordination with this exciting step in our journey. The goal of the album is three-fold: to support the work of Canadian artists; to create a calling card for our show in order to spread some home-grown music love across the country; and to proliferate songs of the Canadian musical theatre, including four never-before-recorded pieces.

How can you help make this a reality? By investing in the project through this page. In exchange for your hard-earned money, you will receive awesome rewards ranging from a gorgeous, customized Canoe thank-you card to an advance copy of the album itself to a private home concert! In addition to your crowd-funding, you can tell your friends and family how great it felt to support some kick-ass CanCon.

What is crowd-funding? Simply put, it is using a platform (in this case, Rocket Hub) through which a multitude of people can donate to a project in small amounts in exchange for unique rewards. (Trade, not aid.) Through the aggregation of funds from these “micro-patrons”, a project can be financed.

Why $5000? Thanks for asking! The project budget is broken down into the following areas: recording sessions at John Loach Engineering; mixing and mastering by John Loach (you can hear his work on the albums of Patricia Zentilli and Marcus Nance on iTunes); graphic design so the album looks as good as it sounds; mechanical rights for all the songs so that the writers get their due; and the environmentally-friendly pressing and packaging of the albums by Indie Pool in Toronto.

And that’s aboot it! This is a goal that we have been talking about for years and it is exciting to see it manifesting. We gratefully appreciate your help in taking us a step closer to our dream.

Chimo! (That’s right – it’s a farewell too! How did this never catch on?!)
