A UN Women report published in July 2011 stated that a third of New Zealand women have experienced physical violence from a partner within the last ten years (2000-2010).
From the 14 countries in the OECD, New Zealand was found to be one of the worst for domestic violence and changes made this year to the way funding is administered to support organisations make it more important than ever to highlight the issue.
"Broken Glass" is the next short film from award-winning filmmaker Chaz Harris (The Shoe Box/101 Dates). The film is a fantasy/drama about a young boy called Max Petersen who is being bullied at school and has an abusive father at home. One day, when playing alone in the woods, he makes a mysterious discovery that will change his life forever.
"Broken Glass" has attracted the support of Jigsaw, a network of 42 organisations across New Zealand providing family and child protection services. In addition to this, the film is also endorsed by Shine; New Zealandʼs largest single domestic abuse organisation registered as a charity. In 2011, Shine is celebrating 20 years of doing what works to stop domestic abuse.
Executive Director Jane Drumm says, “these are tough times and family violence is a grim issue - on both counts, this country needs to feel that a light is shining on a terrible problem and that some brightness is coming”. For more information about Shine visit www.2shine.org.nz
The aim is to create a story of fantasy realism that revisits a time in filmmaking when audiences were asked to use their imaginations instead of being shown with visual effects.
Even though it may be possible to make the film for less than our target amount, the more money we can raise, the better. On completion of the film, we intend to enter it for leading international film festivals. Although a financial return on investment with short films is rare, it is important for the film's subject matter to be portrayed on screen.
All amounts are in USD and all funds raised at the end of the fundraising period will go towards the making of the film regardless of whether the target is reached.
