MONARITA Tours Canada, Pt 2: Halifax/Winnipeg

MONARITA continues its Canadian Tour - with your help!

MonaRita is a new play by Toronto poet Shannon Bramer that features actors Sara Tilley and Ruth Lawrence with Mark White, directed by award-winning film and theatre director, Sherry White. The show is co-produced by two independent theatre companies from St. John's, Newfoundland, White Rooster Theatre and She Said Yes!, and has just played to great response and reviews at the Toronto Fringe Festival and the Hamilton Fringe Festival, following a run in St. John's NL.

Fresh from being chosen as Fringe Toronto 2011 Outstanding Ensemble by NOW Magazine reviewers Jon Kaplan and Glenn Sumi, the producers of MonaRita set their sights on a run in Halifax before heading west to Winnipeg as a curated selection in FemFest, a nationally recognized festival dedicated to female writers. Word of our acceptance to the Atlantic Fringe came just last week and was greeted with cheers, followed by a peek into our piggy bank.

The companies now need to raise some extra funds to attend both festivals worry-free this fall.  Donations from viewers of the show in Toronto have already come in but the women need to raise a little more.

“We had great audiences in Toronto and good ones in Hamilton but the cost of taking three people off the island to four different cities is still a bit of a challenge,” says Lawrence. “The box office, fundraising and ad revenue have been vital to our success and we’ve done so well at the first two festivals that we are determined to get to the next two in September.”

The companies have partnered with presenter Resource Centre for the Arts Theatre who will once again help get the show on the road.  Donations from individuals or companies who support our theatre work with $25 or more will recieve a charitable tax receipt.

We need your support! Every penny helps to get Newfoundland independent theatre off the Island and to a wider audience. This tour is building a national reputation for all our companies and providing an opportunity to network with other theatre artists...necessary progress for hardworking artists!

Should we exceed our fundraising goal, this will ensure that all of the cast and crew are not only covered for travel and per diems in Winnipeg and Halifax, but that they can be paid a professional wage for their work.

The reviewers who have seen the show so far are heaping praise on this hilarious production:

Go see this dark comedy about two real women dealing with love, motherhood, self-acceptance … you will not be disappointed…the most enjoyable experience I have had at a Fringe show in a very long time… simple but stunning… flawless acting, 5 out of 5… Stephanie Yantsis, Hamilton Fringe Review

A fresh look at retaining identity in the face of motherhood and relationships…quirky dialogue…honest observations … Tilley earns huge applause…DF-G, NOW (Toronto)

Tilley’s performance…is vulnerable and impassioned. Lawrence’s…is likeable, enviable and sad. …timeless. Mooney on Theatre (Toronto)

A so-called ‘chick flick’… will interest, even fascinate males audiences too. Well done in both creation and execution. Terry Metter, Ontario Arts Review (Toronto)

A performance that simply has to be seen... Ashley Fitzpatrick,The Telegram (St. John’s)
