Darko, originally from Belgrade, moved to New York City in 1991 where he obtained BFA in film and video from City College of New York. From 1997 until 2003 he has worked at the production company Spiral Pictures/Ross Institute as in-house documentary filmmaker. At the same time Darko was a Media Studies faculty member at the Ross school, and taught production courses at Long Island University. In 2004 his feature documentary “Escape” won the Audience Award at its world premiere at Hamptons International Film Festival. It was screened at numerous international festivals since, including: Amsterdam, Leipzig, Go East, Belgrade and Santiago de Chile Film Festival. In 2006 Darko’s script for “Here and There” won Balkan Fund script development award at 47th Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece. Later, the film “Here and There” won Best New York Narrative Award at its world premier at Tribeca 2009 Film Festival with critical acclaim from Variety, MTV and indieWire. After Tribeca, Here and There went on winning of total of 15 awards at the festivals around the world in 2009. The most important awards were: four awards at Cinema Tous Ecrans Festival, Switzerland, including Best Directing Award “Golden Reflection”, three awards at Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, including Best Director of Foreign film award, Special Jury award at Skip City festival, Japan and many others. FIPRESCI Serbia – Film Critics International Federation voted Darko Lungulov for the Best Director in 2009 in Serbia.
At the national festivals in Serbia, HERE AND THERE won many awards, most notably: Sofest – Best Directing, Best Actress; Cinema City - Best Actress and others.
Here and There was voted by Serbian Film Academy for the candidate from Serbia for Foreign language film Oscar, but disqualified because of too much English language in dialogue and the runner-up was sent instead. Here and There won Film of the Year “Oscar for Popularity” award, voted by the audience in Serbia.
Darko’s next project “Monument to Michael Jackson” was nominated for Balkan Fund Script development Award at 50th International Thesaloniki Film Festival in Greece.
