The 8068 Project is an experimental collective formed specifically for the Adelaide Fringe. Working via skype and video in a cross-cultural collaboration between a San Francisco based choreographer and Australian dancers, The 8068 Project will present its work live for the first time at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe.
The company's director and choreographer, Cera Byer, holds a degree in Dance Performance & Choreography, with a minor in World Music & Dance, from San Francisco State University, and has taught internationally at conferences, festivals, studios, and retreats. Her technical approach comes from ongoing exhaustive exploration into Graham, Horton, and Dunham techniques, alongside Kathak, Persian, Bellydance, Hip Hop, Funk, and Afro-Caribbean traditions, but her choreography is anything but a dry academic approach to fusion. Cera's work has been called "a hot sweaty tribute that will have audiences and dancers alike moving and moved by the material", and "organic evolving studies into the biospheres of human emotion". Cera founded Shoebox Studio in San Francisco and is the founder and director of Damage Control Dance Theater.
The company's producer, Bridgett Cains, is an independent dancer from Adelaide who is currently based in Melbourne. She performed her debut self-produced solo work, External Oblique, at the 2010 Adelaide Fringe, and has since collaborated on various dance and circus projects. She has trained, taught and performed in a wide range of dance styles, but her current focus is on the combination of contemporary dance, fusion bellydance and contortion.
The rest of The 8068 Project come from extremely diverse backgrounds, spanning acting, traditional and fusion bellydance, African dance, hip hop and circus disciplines. Keep checking back each week as we share their stories with you.
