PROJECT BACKGROUND
ONE ARM AND A LEG is a piece of devised theater inspired by Yasunari Kawabata's short story ONE ARM.
ONE ARM opens with a woman giving her man to arm. There is no reason. That’s just the way it happens. The style of writing makes me wonder about what I am missing in the language—what has been lost in translation. The premise makes me wonder about what I am missing in myself—what I have given to others, what I have received. I begin to think about the way cultures meet. I begin to wonder what makes a universal gestural vocabulary (i.e. saying hello and goodbye with the hands) transcend words. This is why, I feel, we must tell this story with bodies and voices, with ideas and curiosities.
With ONE ARM AND A LEG, I want to expand the themes in Kawabata’s story into a piece of dance theater about physical loss, the location of home, and identity through body. With an image of a missing limb comes a whole slew of sociopolitical associations but, at its root, also comes a metaphor. The arm transforms into something else. An offering, a sacrifice, a gift, a sadness. Using dance, video, music, and text, we attempt to open up a dialogue about these themes and investigate moments of connection and moments of departure.
At times poetic, at times violent, ONE ARM AND A LEG seeks to provoke, to meditate, to linger on such questions as: Where does one person end and another person begin? In what sense do we own our own bodies? How is identity related to the physical self? Our project is also about how we communicate—through words, through theater, through language, through dance. We invite an audience to share in the collective live experience of shaking our hands, saying hello, and saying goodbye.
