This summer I'm venturing off to Israel to volunteer with Magen David Adom, the Israeli Ambulance Dept. For two months, I will be a critical member of the ambulance team consisting of 98% volunteers from Israel and abroad. After a 10-day intensive training course, I will be required to work 50 hours a week on the ambulance in Ramat Gan. My trip will give me an in-depth look at the culture, society, the best, and worst parts of Israel. I will be documenting my trip, from start to finish, while focusing on individual ambulance squad members and focusing on the question "Why volunteer amidst the danger involved with being a First Responder in a country that could be struck by rockets at anytime?" This will turn into a multimedia-documentary to display the bravery and camaraderie EMT's in Israel face everyday.
I fell in love with Israel when I went on Birthright last summer, and in turn, took Hebrew classes throughout my Freshman year at Syracuse University because I knew I wanted to go back. I have found a way and need your help!
Throughout this 7-week excursion, from June 14th to August 6th, I plan on writing a blog once a week, with multimedia images and videos, to show friends and colleagues back home the sacrifice volunteers at MDA make ever day. Upon my return, I plan on speaking with the local "Hillel" at Syracuse University and will give a presentation of my trip and create a multimedia video presentation.
This strictly volunteer position does not cover any costs of the trip and thus there is a necessity to pay for all the expenses which will include travel to and from Israel, food, transportation and living experiences.
Expenses: The estimate total trip cost is $4,400 (airfare $1,800, room and board in Tel Aviv $1,600, MDA Training Program $800, local travel and misc. $200)
I have raised $2,100 from scholarships and grants so far, and this leaves a balance of $2,300.
