I am totally excited for the brand new, original musical I've written. Now it's time to put up its first staged reading in NYC!
The show is SUMMER SCHLOCK: a seven-character, ensemble-driven, backstage musical comedy set during one wild week at a summer stock theatre in that glorious year – 1977. It has everything: Attempted suicide as a comic opening number! A chubby teenager obsessed with becoming the next Meatloaf! A summer stock love triangle gone horribly wrong! An escape from a hospital!! And groovy, 70’s-inspired music!!
I have been developing the show with director Andy Sandberg (Tony Award: HAIR) and we are at the point where we need producers. But producers don't want to get involved with a new musical until they've seen it on its feet in front of an audience – hence the need for a NYC staged reading! And as bookwriter, composer, and lyricist, it falls on little ol’ me to mount this reading. The budget we have created (payment for the actors, director, space rental, stage manager, etc.) comes to around $3,500.
This is where you come in! Now is your big chance to be a theatrical producer, without spending millions of dollars (not that I'd say 'no' to a million dollars...) I am reaching out through this cool site, Rocket Hub, to raise the money we need.
A little about Rocket Hub: It's a site designed to help creative people like me collect money for their projects. It's called 'crowd-funding.' All you have to do is sign up to donate your amount through the website, and depending on the amount you donate, you could get a special treat from me and the show!
If, by the grace of God, we go over the requested amount, that money would go to making a demo CD, which could be used to market the show to theatres around the country.
So, to make a long story short (too late!), I'm looking to mount a staged reading of my musical, and I need all my friends help to make it happen.
You know what to do next...thank you for your generous support!
