What am I doing?
I'm raising funds to cover the costs of creating an exhibition focused on the 'Faces:Newfoundland' which will be displayed at the JL Gallery, 86 West St, Corner Brook in May 2011. The costs include printing eight large, 36"x22", archival black and white portraits and the costs associated with traveling to Corner Brook, Fogo Island, and St. John's by car.
Each portrait will be taken on location with natural lighting and the same gray background. I will also document the location by taking a wide angle shot of the portrait site.
Why is this project important?
I've been fascinated with the haunting portraits by Richard Avedon specifically his 'In the American West' portrait series. Avedon traveled the American West with a portable studio and recorded amazing portraits of the people, and characters, he found along the way. I believe the people of Newfoundland would make very compelling subjects for a similar project.
The goal of this project is to focus on people I encounter in Newfoundland and to highlight, by removing the context, a glimpse into the history we carry around with us in our expressions.
Additional funds
If this project raises more than my stated goal I will use the extra money to send archival prints of the portraits to each subject.
What do you get?
Rocket Hub requires that every donation results in a prize of some sort. Not only do you get the satisfaction of knowing you are helping the arts, but you will get recognition, or a gift, for your donation. 100% of the funds will go towards the project (printing and travel) and will not result in direct financial gain for myself.
RocketHub is not an investment or charity. It is an exchange: funds from fans for rewards from me. It's an All & More funding mechanism: if I don't reach my financial goal I get to keep what I raise. But if I do reach my goal, I get access to exciting opportunities.
