I'm a theatre artist in Toronto, busting my ass to make classical theatre cool and accessible and unintimidating. I'm also a huge nerd.
In 2009, I started Urban Bard Productions, a company that combines my passion for classical theatre with my love of playing outside. Our mandate is 'Classical Theatre Where You Least Expect It', which means we perform behind malls, in corporate courtyards, and once even on the roof of a condo tower. I'm always amazed at how vividly you can bring Shakespeare to life in an urban setting, and I love that we get to bring great plays to people who might never set foot in a theatre.
I started out as an actor, and then got into stage combat. I've dabbled in voice work, mostly with the old-time-radio shows of Decoder Ring Theatre. I build lots of odd props (my favourite was a reproduction of a turn-of-the-century electroshock therapy machine for Driftwood Theatre's 'King Lear', complete with creepy clicking buzzing sounds), and fell into designing an entire production once ('Romeo & Juliet' with Tempest Theatre). Directing found me by accident after a knee injury temporarily limited my ability to perform onstage, but it suits me very well- I get to facilitate the process of great actors finding the nuance and clues in great texts, and that's very rewarding. I've directed 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', 'Twelfth Night', 'As You Like It', 'The Two Noble Kinsmen', and 'Romeo and Juliet', and this season with Urban Bard I'm looking forward to another 'Midsummer' followed by the delicious 'Richard III'.
