Born in Denmark, raised in Virginia (for the most part), and now living in New York City, Mieka Dovey was exposed to a vast plethora of music and culture throughout her lifetime. “She was born screaming so loud! The doctors delivering her said to me, ‘she’s gonna be an opera singer!’” says Mieka’s mother.
Mieka delved into the arts at a very early age after seeing a VHS of ‘Michael Jackson’s Greatest Video Hits.’ “I had this dire need to be able to sing and dance just like Mike,” says Mieka. By the ripe age of 5 she was already competing quite successfully in the fields of Ballet, Jazz, and Tap in several venues across the country.
“I could ALWAYS sing though, I was blessed with this little quirk to manipulate my voice well. I remember singing along with my Aretha Franklin tape and the Cast Recording of Phantom of the Opera and just being able to do it without any second thought,” says Dovey. By the age of 12 Mieka was auditioning for District and State choirs, performing the leading roles in Musicals for community theaters, and was an accomplished soloist in various concerts throughout Virginia.
In 2005, Mieka was accepted to and attended the highly prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy to study Musical Theatre. “Everything changed after Interlochen. I had this new incredible control over my voice and I felt extremely emotionally connected to all the material I was singing. I finally felt like I was able to perform well!” exclaims Dovey.
At the age of 18, Mieka left all of her family and friends behind and moved to New York City to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy to study Musical Theatre. “Being a recording artist WAS and IS my main goal, but I felt like in order to be the best performer I could possibly be, I needed to go to Learn more about my craft,” says Dovey.
Dovey graduated from AMDA in February 2010 and is still in New York City working on her debut album which will be released in 2011. She’s also performing all over the city and collaborating with artists such as Zach Adam, Ryan Perfect, Devynity, Jae Hall, and many more. You also might catch her on Broadway soon!
