NYC SALT is a photography program for inner city teenagers that is taught by professional photographers and photo editors in NYC. It was inspired by the documentary film, Born into Brothels, in 2005. We meet with the students in a photography studio in Chelsea twice a week teaching the art and business of photography. We have gallery shows to celebrate their work. We go on field trips to magazines and picture agencies to introduce the students to different careers within the industry.
This past year, we have begun development of a college mentoring program to help our students use the portfolios they create to get into great schools. The mentoring program also focuses on essay writing, development of college lists and SAT prep.
To date we have had 14 students graduate and go on to college, almost all of whom are the first in their families. Many have received scholarships for their photography portfolios.
