A Little About Me

I am an anthropology graduate student at Rice University in Houston and have been conducting my PhD research in the Pacific region for about 10 months. I've lived or worked in Samoa, Kiribati, Fiji, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands. Highlights include drinking fermented coconut sap (kokioki) on a remote atoll in the Gilbert Islands, jumping off waterfalls in Samoa, and snorkeling in ra'ui (traditional protected areas) in Rarotonga! I am certain that we will not be able to adequately protect our oceans until we understand not only the technological and ecological impacts on the marine environment but also the social, economic, political and cultural drivers behind them. This takes a lot of hard work, and more hours in conference rooms and cubicles than I care to admit, but the stakes are high and the results of success priceless!
