My name is Katherine (Kate) Hawkings. I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand where I set traps in trees to catch the boogey monster, pretended I was Sailor Moon, and built 'houses' out of freshly cut grass. I had a great childhood, with parents who nurtured my interest in books; I read whatever I could get my hands.
To say I'm impulsive would probably be an understatement. When I was sixteen I left school to study exercise science at university. When I was nineteen I flew off to California with way too many clothes and not enough money. When I was twenty I followed my boyfriend to Australia, before moving to England a year later. Yeah, some of my impulsive decisions have been mistakes, but I've learned from every single one of them.
I love sports and exercise, and I think it's a very important part of my life and enjoy finding fun new ways to keep fit. I primarily played netball in my earlier years, before switching to ice hockey in high school. I also love pole fitness and martial arts, especially muay Thai and karate, although I also want to try my hand at Brazilian ju-jitsu. If I could learn any new sport it would be parkour or street running.
I currently live in Leeds, England, with that same boyfriend I moved to Australia with just over two years ago. I love him more than ever. In my spare time I... hey... I don't have any spare time? Maybe I'll just update this section when I do...
... and the writing thing?
For as long as I can remember books have been a huge part of my life. I remember sitting on the sofa listening to my mom as she read the Little House on the Prairie series one chapter at a time. I remember puzzling over Nancy Drew mysteries and I remember fantasizing about what would be there if I were to ever venture to the top of the Magic Faraway Tree.
Ever since we read those first tales together my mind has been filled with characters and creatures, fighting for their own place in my day dreams. It wasn't until relatively recently however, that I realized I could actually take these figments of my imagination and weave my own tales around them. Before then I had always seen writing as an unobtainable pursuit. It was something that I could enjoy, but couldn't entertain as a viable career path because I hadn't studied the right subjects in university.
So often I've heard of authors who penned their first novel as soon as they picked up a pencil when they were five years old. My first attempt at writing definitely didn't have that sort of happy ending, neither did the second, nor the third. I'm hoping that the stories I choose to share with the world are worthy of your attention.
