My entire life has been dedicated to furthering our reach of exploration and understanding of the world around us. I’ve assembled and worked with the finest teams pushing the envelope of endurance and technology as we’ve delved ever deeper into the mysteries of the Earth. I’ve led many autonomous robotic and crewed projects in exploration and technology development for the National Science Foundation, NASA, National Institute of Standards and Technology and the private sector - culminating in two back-to-back expeditions to Antarctica. Currently I am leading a NASA project to develop an intelligent autonomous cryobot for transporting autonomous underwater vehicle science payloads through the ice caps of the outer planet icy moons of Juptier. This summer, NASA awarded us a follow-on contract to develop a scaled operational cryobot to be tested on the Greenland ice shelf in 2014. On the commercial side, I developed the world's safest, most compact underwater rebreather system now being used worldwide for sport and science as the new diving standard for Poseidon Systems.
Building on my BS, MS and PhD degrees in engineering, I have over 30 years of professional research, design, integration, and deployment experience in structures, dynamics, mechanical systems, advanced laser radar design, 3-D laser radar and sonar data processing, and automated/robotic systems design, integration, and test for terrestrial, underwater and space applications.
It is my firm belief that we are facing complex challenges on Earth for resources, environmental balance, political stability, and population growth. By 2050 predictions indicate we will have a population of ten billion. There is much we need to do here, but by also ensuring we reach beyond the cradle of the Earth, we can help create the solutions that will benefit all humankind.
Based on 17 years of research now anchored by international orbital confirmation that water is abundant on the Moon, we have formed Shackleton Energy Company (SEC) to tackle one of the most challenging problems of our time - improving life on and off Earth by significantly reducing the cost to access and operate in space using rocket propellants derived from lunar ice. When successful SEC will provide all the fuels and services in space to once and for all open the space transportation highway to stimulate untold new opportunities in science, security, and commerce including tourism.
