Description

Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder is a playwright, journalist, teacher, new mom and amateur cook (not a chef, a cook).  The Alabama Shakespeare Festival commissioned/produced her play, Gee’s Bend, which tells the story of the famed quilters of rural Alabama (Samuel French). The play has subsequently been produced at the Denver Center, Cleveland Playhouse, Arden Theatre, Hartford Stage, and Kansas City Rep, among others.  Her play, The Furniture of Home, which deals with the Gulf Coast recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina premiered at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in 2009. In 2011, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival produced her play, The Flag Maker of Market Street, directed by Leah Gardiner.  Her play, The Bone Orchard, was commissioned by the Denver Center Theatre and workshopped at the Perry Mansfield New Works Festival (2009).  Other plays include Fresh Kills at the Royal Court, directed by Tony nominee Wilson Milam, The First Day of Hunting Season(Ensemble Studio Theatre) and The Spirit of Ecstasy.  The American Theatre Critics Association honored her with the Osborn Award for an Emerging Playwright in 2008. She is a proud alumnus of Youngblood at EST.

Elyzabeth holds a degree in economics and women’s studies from SUNY Purchase and graduated with an MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University (2004) where she received the Tisch Departmental Fellowship.  She has also been awarded the Generation NEXT Fellowship at EST, the Prism Screenwriting Fellowship (2004), the Tennessee Williams Playwriting Scholarship and the Daken Memorial Fellowship at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and has been a resident at the MacDowell Colony.  She worked as a staff writer on the CBS show, Love Monkey.
